A tragedy of Kurdish journalist

Diyarbakir is important for me. I fell in love for the first time in this city. My first news with my signature appeared there and I boast with it. I lived all the principles of my life in Diyarbakir. I would like to return.

Burhan Karadeniz was a Kurdish journalist. He tried to work as a journalist in Diyarbakir in the 1990s. He first worked at the newspaper of Yeni Ülke (New Courty).

At that time, he worked with journalists such as Apê Mûsa, Gurbetelli Ersoz, Huseyin Deniz, Ferhat Tepe, and Hafiz Akdemir, who were killed by shaowy forces and published newspapers.

On August 6, 1992, he was attacked and injured in Diyarbakir. After that attack, his life was bound to a wheelchair.

However, Karadeniz did not give up on journalism and continued his work on abroad.

He worked in Europe for the newspapers Ozgur Politika (Free Politics), Med TV, and Medya TV and participated in the founding of the Union of Kurdish Journalists and he was a member of that organization.

“my soul in on those lands”

The book titled Burhan’ın Kitabı (The Book of Burhan) was first published by Avesta Publishing House in 2009. This book was written and prepared by journalist Huseyin Kalkan.

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the death of Burhan Karadeniz, the publishing house and compiler of the book wanted to make this book available in an expanded edition.

We talked about the journalism of Burhan Karadeniz and the new edition of the book with the journalist Huseyin Kalkan who is the editor and compiler of this book.

Huseyin Kalkan

It has been 20 years since Burhan died, but he was always with us. I visited his grave several times when I came to Diyarbakir. His grave overlooks the Hevsel; there are also the graves of people like Vedat Aydin and Kurdish intellectuals.

Burhan had a friend in Germany named Mahmut Guneş. They met each other in Almanya. They had a sincere friendship. A year ago, on the anniversary of his death, I had an interview with Burhan. That interview was published in our newspaper (Yeni Yaşam). After thas news, some friends who did not have the opportunity to write when the first edition of the book was published. They sent me their texts. In the expanded edition of the book, we have added 5 more articles about Burhan.

some suggestions for founding independent platforms

There should be platforms that allow people to express opposing views for our society. Both criticisms will lead to the development of our society, the development of our newspaper, and the development of our individuality. However, in practice, we couldn’t see this. Some people say that the cause of this that live in a time when the pressure on journalism continues. Leave that behind for now, then discuss and say what you want to say.

It is acceptable that this opinion also contains a bit of truth. But it has to be created for our journalism, society, and politics. So that we can build a culture of criticism. In my opinion, that will be beneficial for all of us. That was one of the topics we always talked about with Burhan. He suggested different ideas and creating platforms as a basic foundation. We still recommend this, but it is not practiced.
