Some events of that time compel me to mention them. I am a witness to these events and I have to draw them.

Mustafa Duzgun

In Tarlabas district of Taksim, we are guests of the painter Mustafa Duzgun. He comes from Pulur in Tunceli. He has been engaged in art for more than 50 years, making paintings and sculptures.

Mustafa Duzgun sees himself as a member of the 68th generation and is pleased with this title.

The painter Duzguni informs us that his first exhibition of paintings was held in Izmir Orman Pavyon (Forest Pavillon) in 1970. He says that from that day until now he has held many art exhibitions.

When he drawing a new picture

Olive tree branches, doves of peace, nature, thornbush, and flowers are the main motifs that appear in Duzguni’s paintings.

During our conversation, he said that for some of his paintings, he goes to nature and studies there for his paintings to create their basis.

It is important to state that Duzguni’s workshop involves years of labor.

“Art depends on space”

The bird behind bars, inmates of prisons.

The artist is connected to the place, no matter where he lives or stays, the art he creates will be influenced by the nature there or a motif he represents there. It is impossible not to have an effect. There is a pine tree in front of my house, but when I look at its branches on the roof of the house, I see newly born pine trees in that beauty…

“Art of our time”

During the Gar massacre in Ankara in 2015, I was not there by chance, I was in Antalya, but my friends were there and some people died in that event. I made about 20 works about that massacre. This also means that the artist becomes an artist of the time in which he lives.

“The people of this country are in an uneasy mood”

Duzgun announced that the inspiration for both paintings came from Mehmed Uzuni’s book Light as Love, and Dark as Death. The main panel shows the murder of Kevok (the main character of the novel) and the second panel describes his murderers.

I live in Turkey, and there are dead people in Turkey. People living in this country are worried; someone like Sinan Ates, the leader of Grey Wolves, is murdered in the street, and a lynching is organized against the leader of the opposition party in Ankara (there was a possibility that he would die there). The point is right here; then it is impossible for me as an artist not to make a picture.

At the end of the conversation, painter Mustafa Duzgun informs us that his exhibition will be on display at Ibramaki Art Gallery in Kusadasi Municipality from May 22 to 28. The theme of the exhibition is “Let the war stop, let the blood stop”.
