With the support of the European Endowment for Democracy (EED), Botan International will hold 8 online Kurdish Digital Journalism Workshops between 27-28-29 October. Sertaç Kayar, Ali Duran Topuz, Hozan Adar, Murat Bayram, Omer Faruk Baran, Kadri Esen Semiha Yıldız, and Ferid Demirel are the trainers of the workshops.
Digital Media Management Workshop: Ali Duran Topuz
Ali Duran Topuz was born in Sivas in 1967. He graduated from the Faculty of Law at Istanbul University. Since 1994, he has worked alongside lawyers at numerous radio stations and newspapers. He was also involved in the establishment of Akşam and Radikal newspapers. He has worked as a presenter at Radio Sputnik and IMC. He also writes about law and politics in numerous magazines. He is the editor-in-chief for Artı Gerçek and Artı TV. He has published a book entitled Rû û Kûr”.
Social Media Editing Workshop: Hozan Adar
Hozan Adar was born in Mardin in 1991. He graduated from Istanbul University’s Faculty of Communication and he completed his master’s degree in Digital Journalism and New Media from the same university. He worked as an assistant at the Social Media Academy of Kadir Has University. He studied “Development of Journalism” at Poynter News University, “Journalism” at Universitythethe university the University of Michigan, “Global Diplomacy” at the University of London, and “Digital Journalism” at the Facebook Journalism Project. He has worked as an editor, reporter and social media consultant for TRT 6, Bloomberg, Reportare, Directside, Ruptly, Getty Images, Vice News, Inside Turkey, Kurdish Podcast, Kurdistan24, and many national and international media organizations. He works as a freelancer at Facebook/Meta. He is a member of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the Turkish Journalists’ Union (TGS), and the Southeast Journalists’ Association (GGC). He received the honorary award in the finals of the Siena International Drone Photography Competition held in Italy. He received an award in the Best Journalists of the Year competition of the South East Journalists Association.
Ferid Demirel: Conducting interviews Workshops
Ferid Demirel is the editor of bianet Kurdish. He studied at Marmara University, Department of Journalism. He is currently pursuing his master’s degree in journalism at Marmara University. He has worked as a reporter, editor, news manager, and editor-in-chief in Birgün newspaper, Dicle Haber Ajansı (DİHA), Dem TV, Rudaw TV, and Sputnik Kurdistan. He is one of the authors of the e-book “Digital Kurdish Journalism” and the “Kurdish-Turkish Dictionary of Social Gender News”. His research work was published in the book “Haber Analizi ve Arşiv İncelemerileyle Türkiye’de 9 Gazete”. He taught Kurdish media history, rights-based journalism, and interviews at Bianet and Botan International. He published a book titled “Guldesteyek ji Baxê Rewanê” (Sor Yay.) and another titled “Çirokên Şêwra Ermenan” (Cervantes Yay.). He is the winner of the Musa Anteri Journalism Award and the Free Press Journalists (in the Kurdish News section) of 2023.
Semiha Yıldız: The Technical Workshop for Making Podcasts
Semiha Yıldız was born in Şırnak in 1994. She studied Computer Science at Inönü University. She has animated cartoons and clips at Zarok TV for 3 years. She directed and animated 2 animation films named “Cudiyê Miradan” and “Botan”. The film of “Cudiyê Miradan” won the best animation award at the film festivals in Hamburg, London and Ifsak. She has worked as an editor of videos as a freelance. She is currently the editor of the Botan Podcast at Botan International company.
Kadri Esen: Newspaper Management Office
Kadri Esen was born in Diyarbakır. He studied Public Relations and Communication at Firat University in Elazığ between 2009 and 2013. He started working as a journalist at Tigris News Agency (DIHA) in 2014. After that, he worked as a journalist for newspapers such as Özgür Gündem, Azadiya Welat, Rojeva Medya, Welat, E-Rojname and Mesopotamia Agency. Currently, he is the publisher of Xwebûn newspaper and works as an editor in chief in Mesopotamia Agency.
Photo-Journalism Workshop: Sertaç Kayar
Sertaç Kayar is a journalist and photographer. He started his journalism career in 2006. He worked in many national and international media organizations. Kayar worked at Reuters in the photo department and many of his photos were chosen as the photos of the year. His photos have been published in well-known media organizations such as The Times, The Guardian, Der Spiegel, Die Welt, Lemonde, and BBC. His images have been shown in many international exhibitions. He won first prize in the photography categories at the Metin Göktepe Journalism Award Competition and Southeastern Journalists Society’s Successful Journalists Competition. Kayar currently works for Sputnik and has been on strike for more than 2 months. He is a member of the Southeastern Journalists Association and director of the Turkish Journalists Union.
Preparing Content of Podcasts Workshop: Omer Faruk Baran
Omar Faruk Baran was born in Şanlıurfa. Omer Faruk was awarded the poem “Bîremjar” in 2011 and the short story “Zênebej” in 2012. Baran started working as a journalist in Rudaw with literary and art news and then became a reporter for Sputnik. Since 2017, he has worked for the Voice of America. Omer has published 16 issues of photography fanzine called “flashhilat.” He has a book of poetry and a novel called “Şeveke Îstismar.” His short film “Tercûme” won awards at international festivals. Since March 2022, he has been publishing podcasts about culture, art, and literature every Thursday at 5:50 p.m. on the Perxudres Podcast. Perxudres Podcast was awarded the 2022 Journalism Prize.
Literary Journalism Workshops: Murat Bayram
Murat Bayram was born in Şırnak. Bayram has been working in journalism for years. He is the CEO and founder of Botan International, founder of Botan Times. He is one of the founders of the Kurdish section of bianet News, and he worked as its editor while also providing seminars in the Kurdish and Turkish languages. Aside from his work in Kurdish news reporting, he’s also worked for; the New York Times, The Guardian, Al Jazeera International, Deutsche Welle, Middle East Eye, and RT TV, writing news stories, providing photo and video stories, and providing translation services. His news stories have been translated into 6 languages across 8 countries. He’s received training from the fellowship program at Oxford University in England, as well as the French Academy. He is one of the authors of the e-book “Kurdish-Turkish Dictionary of Social Gender News”. He has a book named “Belkî Îşev Binive”.
