What are the favourite foods of Kurdish women?

A few days ago, one of my friends was looking at the results of our survey. After a few slides, he turned to me and said: “Why did you ask such a question? The question was about love of food. We asked Kurdish women about their favourite foods and drinks.

A few months ago, I searched “Kürt kadınları”, “Kurdish people” and “Kurdish women”  in Google and looked at their photos for the launch of the survey. If you look also, there is not too much differentiation between them and on the internet Kurds are unit and homogeneous. According to Google, Kurds are soldiers, dancers and partisans.

This is not the fault of Google, Kurds are known in this way in Türkiye and also internationally. Because Kurds are politic and homogeneous, everyone is curious about their opinions. Except for this, people are uninterested in anything about the Kurds. When one searches for another thing, everyone gets surprised and asks: “Why did you ask this question?”

In fact the answer to this question is my motivation for being a researcher. A few years ago, again in the political age, everyone was asking the Kurdish leaders and elders what the Kurds were thinking and what they were going to do. I noticed that everyone was talking about the Kurds. For example, while the president of Diyarbakir province from the AK Party said that the Kurds would support President Erdogan, the HDP said that the Kurds would vote for “own”. After that, I was convinced that the two sides do not even know each other.

That year, in one of my interviews, I said: “We want to inform north and south Kurds about their agenda and themselves”. The journalist was surprised. I said: “You are interested in politics, can you tell me the population of the south and how many parties there are? The journalist didn’t know anything except PDK and YNK. This was not due to the journalist’s ignorance but to the situation itself.

So Kurds are not homogeneous and they have different things in their life except politics. I am also interested in Kurds and I want people to look at them from different perspectives. Kurds should be known correctly and objectively. There must be a perspective that all Kurds are not the same and have various kinds of people. It is not easy to move away and leave politics, but we should gradually take into consideration the heterogeneity of politics and other areas of life.

That is why we are curious about everything Kurdish besides the politics so we asked Kurdish women about their favourite foods and drinks.

Our survey was conducted with 1123 Kurdish women in Bingöl, Diyarbakir, Hakkari, Mardin, Siirt, Şırnak, Tunceli, Van, Adıyaman, Gaziantep, Iğdır, Malatya, Şanlıurfa, Adana, Mersin, Ankara, İstanbul and İzmir.

So what are the answers? What are the favourite foods of Kurdish women?

Here are the tables of answers and details of the survey.
