In Farqin, the use of the Kurdish language has been prohibited

The Farqin (Silvan) Municipality Council decided to rename the First Kiliçaslan Neighborhood to “Rindêxan.” Following this decision, the Farqin governor’s office did not allow a Kurdish name to be used in that area.

Since “Rindêxan” is not in Turkish and is a foreign term, the governor’s office did not grant permission.

Statement from the Farqin Municipality

During its meeting in July, our municipality council decided to change the name of the First Kiliçaslan Neighborhood to “Rindêxan.” However, the decision made by our Municipality Council was rejected by the provincial governor’s office. The governor’s office argued that the name “Rindêxan” is not in Turkish and does not exist in the Turkish Language Institution’s culture, and according to the “foreign” language regulations, it was rejected with the following justification: “…Words and expressions that have been created according to foreign language rules and names of places cannot be used… The Sultan Kılıçarslan of the Anatolian Seljuks has been recognized, and the name ‘First Kiliçaslan Neighborhood’ was given in the area that was established in 2023 in the center of Farqin. Kılıçarslan, who is remembered as a crusader, has been memorialized in our district. After this was communicated to the public, it brought additional benefits to the promotion and tourism of our district. For this reason, the name was proposed to be changed to honor this great sultan in our district… Our municipality council’s decision to change the name of the ‘First Kiliçaslan Neighborhood’ to the new name ‘Rindêxan’ was rejected because it is not in Turkish and does not exist in the Turkish Language Institution’s culture, and according to the ‘foreign’ language regulations, there is no public benefit in this change, and since it does not comply with the previously stated principles, it was not accepted by our governor’s office and was subsequently reversed.” We do not accept this decision made by the governor’s office against the Kurdish language and Kurdish names, and we will continue to advocate for the public’s conscience and our people!
