The summer is coming to Diyarbakir, and our clothes have heaviness on us. I am in the old buildings of the Office district. When I entered the building, cool weather hit my face. On the first floor of this building, I saw a signboard that is written ‘A4 Open Art Space’. I heard the sounds of laughter. Before I came here, I had seen the photos of the exhibition. Yes, those photos were bright pictures but this sound made me more excited.
In that building, there is an exhibition called “X-zoomer” prepared by Rojbin Ekinci. When I go inside I think who knows what talented people are inside?
Rojbin made her paintings with the concept of “Modern life and Kurdish women”
We have a short conversation with Rojbin, and she talked about her journey of painting.
Before making this decision, she looked at everything around her and says:
The challenge of our elders with modern life seemed funny to me. My mom is the biggest model for me. Our perspectives are very different from each other. But we live in the same home. I laughed at those challenges. And while I am making these paintings, I think that the model would be my mother, but the objects around the model would refer to me.
I asked curiously to Rojbin. What is the reaction of your mom when she saw these paintings, what did she say?
Rojbin answers laughingly:
My mom had said ‘enough painting old people. You convert us to yourself. My aunt liked it very much, she likes modern life. When I’m painting my nails, she watches me excitedly. Some people like my style. But my mom gets bored because she is exposed all the time. For a while, I hung all my paintings in my room. My mother came and looked at the room and said ‘You have turned this place into an old age asylum.’ But her words don’t bother me because she inspires me, that’s what I want.
Rojbin says that when I get old, I will be like this woman who works from home. Actually, her all paintings, she is herself. For example, she likes the series of ‘Friends’ and places them in his paintings.
There were 4 rooms and a big hall in that flat. Rojbin captured her mother when she watched videos on social media. She took a short film of her mother and showed it in a dark room.
The frame of the video is the same, but her mom changes her position with a laugh when she watches those videos. This dark room have nice affect with smiles of Rojbin’s mom.
According to the information that Rojbin gave us, most of the people left pleased from the exhibition.
If you want to relax a little, go see and smile. The exhibition is open until April 23.
